Porsche 997 is the factory designation for the Porsche 911 Carrera manufactured by Porsche between 2004 and 2012. Production of the Carrera and the Carrera S variants began in early 2004. A popular model of modern 911, the 997 combines the exhilaration of a performance car with the practicality and comfort desired in a daily driver.

This particular 997 had been used regularly for motorway driving as the previous owner had worked up and down the country. On purchasing it our customer realised the paintwork was looking very jaded and, not surprisingly, wanted the history of every motorway mile and every ‘automated car wash’ removed from the surface!

This 997 was a 2006 Basalt Black Metallic and when it came in I was shocked to see how badly scratched and swirled the paintwork was! Don’t get me wrong – I love to see a ‘Porker’ used every day rather than being a Garage Queen, but even I felt a bit sorry for this one! – Master Detailer, UDS

This 997 is a classic example of what ‘detailing’ offers the customer. Many of us buy our ‘pre-loved’ cars on the basis of two things: service history and how the car looks. So often the history might look good but if the car looks tatty it’s an immediate turn off for most buyers and will immediately become a key negotiating point when it comes to sale price. It affects confidence too – if a car looks as though it’s been well maintained then prospective buyers will be more inclined to accept the mechanical side has received equal care and attention.

We’re seeing more and more customers who want their car detailed before they sell it, so there is an increasing awareness of the correlation between appearance and resale value. Mind you, once the car is back to looking tip top it’s amazing how many of them then don’t want to sell it anymore! – Master Detailer, UDS

As always, the detailing process starts with a pre-wash using Ultimate Snow Foam, to remove the larger particles of dirt from the paintwork, followed by a thorough wash using Swissvax Car Bath and rinsed with an Aqua Gleam deionising water filter. Door, boot and bonnet shuts were all cleaned using Meguiar’s All Purpose Cleaner. Patted dry with Swissvax Micro Dry Wonder Drying Towels the Porsche was brought into the studio and the wheels removed for refurbishing.

Before starting work our Master Detailer inspected the paintwork using the Delfesko PosiTest Paint Depth Gauge and a 3M Sun Gun Colour Check Light. The paintwork appeared fairly even in thickness indicating it had not received a re-spray. The Sun Gun showed all the swirls and scratches up even more clearly!

To remove the severe swirls our Master Detailer selected the FLEX PE14-2-150 Rotary Polisher, a 3M Yellow Polishing Pad and SCHOLL Concepts S3 Gold.

Porsche paintwork is typical of German paint – it’s hard and it’s sticky. This means you have to match your compound and pad quite carefully – pick a pad that’s too firm and the paint will ‘grab’ it, pick one that’s too soft and you have to make multiple passes to get the desired effect. I opted for the 3M Yellow Pad because I knew it would do a great job on both the swirls and the deeper scratches – but it was quite tiring as there was a lot of ‘pad hop’ going on! – Master Detailer, UDS

The enhancement process completed the paintwork was refined using a 3M Blue Finishing Pad and 3M Ultrafina SE Polish to bring a full shine to the black metallic paint.

With the paintwork now looking spectacular it was time to protect it. 22PLE VX1 Pro Signature Glass Coat is an optically clear sealant which, once applied to the paintwork and left to cure, dries as hard as glass. This offers an ultra hard, shiny, dirt repellent and hydrophobic barrier highly resistant to scratching or degradation by UV or harsh wash chemicals.

In order to allow the sealant to bond fully the panels must be completely free from all polish residues, so IPA solution was used to ensure the paintwork was completely bare and ready to accept the sealant. Once applied the initial curing takes around 8 hours, so in the interim attention was turned to other areas.

The brushed aluminium exhaust tips were cleaned using zero grade wire wool, the tyres were treated with Swissvax Pneu and all the glass was cleaned with Swissvax Crystal Glass Cleaner. The newly refurbished wheels were treated with 22PLE VM1 Rim & Metal Coat to protect them from brake dust build up.

Once the VX1 Pro Signature Glass Coat had cured the Porsche was treated to a coat of Swissvax Crystal Rock to really deepen the wet look shine.

It’s amazing what a good detail can do for a vehicle. It came in with 26k on the clock looking as though it had done 80k miles. By the time it left it hardly looked as though it had turned a wheel! But that’s the power of detailing. – Master Detailer, UDS

There have been times when all of us wish we had a time machine – but for one chap the dream is a reality. He can go Back To The Future whenever he likes with his very own Delorean time machine replica!

It all started when two Californian prop builders, J Ryan and Sean Bishop, decided they needed a new project. Hunting around they found a Delorean in a salvageable condition and spent the next several years digging through scrap yards and surfing on eBay to pick up all the spare parts they could. The rest they built from scratch. Once they were ready to build it took them four months to create the car as it is today.

One of the biggest supporters of the project was Simon Wells, great grandson of the writer H.G. Wells who wrote the novella ‘The Time Machine’ published back in 1895. Simon got in touch with Robert Zemeckis, director of the three Back To The Future movies and Bob Gale (producer of the same movies) who were both extremely excited with the build quality and level of detail that had gone into the replica.

As it was such a faithful and perfect replica, Universal Studios used this Delorean for three years to promote the celebrations of 25 years of the success of Back To The Future and even invited the car to appear on the 25th Anniversary Edition BTTF Trilogy Blu-ray release. Additionally the car has been used at many show business events including the Scream Awards 2010.

The present owner has been an avid BTTF fan right from the very beginning and couldn’t resist the opportunity to buy this piece of movie wonderment and bring it over to the UK. As well as being a head turner when out for a Sunday drive, the Delorean is available to hire for weddings and events. It has even made its way into showbiz here too when, in 2011, Keith Lemon used it for his show Lemonaid.

Our customer wanted a high quality cover to give the Delorean the best possible protection. As it is truly one (OK, one of six) of a kind a fully bespoke cover was the only solution and we knew we needed the best designer for the job. The Head of Design at Specialised Covers, Douglas Long, has been making fully tailored covers since the late 1970′s when he started out making one for his own Ferrari – and then his friend’s Ferraris, and then friends of friends…. until it had snowballed in to the successful business it is today, employing over 50 people and supplying the likes of Audi, Mercedes, Bentley and McLaren. All covers are cut by hand and sewn at their impressive, state-of-the-art facilities in West Yorkshire. We’ve been working with Specialised Covers for a long time now so we knew Douglas was the man for the job!

With 30 years in the car cover industry I have some pretty amazing memories of some of the extra special covers we have designed. The Delorean was a particularly interesting one as it has so many features completely unlike anything we’ve done before. And of course it’s always fun to work with a legend! – Douglas Long, Chairman, Founder & Chief Designer at Specialised Covers

Douglas made the trip down to the Brands Hatch Head Office of Ultimate Finish to measure the Delorean for its new Elite Tailored Transportation Cover. Elite fabric is an advanced, waterproof, breathable construction. The material stretches, ensuring a really snug fit to the vehicle whilst it’s being transported – vital to minimise the chances of damaging the vehicle due to wind abrasion. The Teflon coating ensures rain and road grime don’t stick to the cover but simply run off it, keeping the vehicle clean and safe.

It was incredibly interesting to watch Douglas work, putting the cover template together piece by piece. The template is created for one side of the vehicle and then mirrored to the opposite side. In the case of a car like this where it’s not completely symmetrical extra care has to be taken to ensure anomalies are taken in to account.

When the cover was finished the results were an absolute testimony to the skills of Douglas and his team at Specialised Covers. The fit was perfect and the customer was very happy indeed!

Japanese paintwork is notoriously soft and black is the most difficult of all to work with. So when this fantastic example of a Subaru Impreza WRX STi came in to the Ultimate Detailing Studio for a Gloss Enhancing Treatment our Master Detailer knew it was going to take all his considerable skill and years of experience to get the paintwork looking ‘spot-on’!

The paintwork had quite a few swirls and scratches in it which wasn’t in itself a problem – Subaru paintwork is very easy to cut back – it’s the refining that takes the time and the skill! – Master Detailer, UDS

Initially the car was pre-cleaned using Ultimate Snow Foam to remove any larger particles of dirt to avoid scratching the soft dark paint any further.

Then using Gtechniq G-Wash, a Swissvax Waschpudel and the two bucket method the Subaru was thoroughly washed. Meguiar’s All Purpose Cleaner was used on the door shuts and wheel arches. As the alloys had a fairly heavy build-up of brake dust particles they were treated with Bilt-Hamber Korrosol. Korrosol is a new product from Bilt-Hamber, specifically designed to remove metallic particles from paintwork and metal substrates by actively seeking out and acting on the particle, causing it to shrink, thereby breaking the bond between the particle and the surface.

Bilt-Hamber’s Korrosol worked brilliantly – I just sprayed it on to the wheel, waited for the colour change and then rinsed it all away! It worked so quickly and doesn’t damage the lacquer on the wheel or on paintwork, so it’s a definite permanent feature in the detailing routine from now on! – Master Detailer, UDS

Thoroughly cleaned the Subaru was given a pure water rinse with an Aqua Gleam filter and patted dry with Swissvax Micro Dry Wonder Drying Towels. Then it was time to bring it indoors and for our Master Detailer to assess the paintwork with a Defelsko PosiTest Paint Depth Gauge and a 3M Sun Gun Colour Check Light – an ultra-bright light that shows up the true condition of the paintwork.

I could see the paintwork needed quite a bit of attention, so I chose to start SCHOLL Concepts S40 with a yellow 3M Polishing Pad and then for the refining process I swapped to 3M Ultrafina and the 3M Blue Finishing Pad. I had to be careful though because even this combination was prone to leaving faint holograms! – Master Detailer, UDS

It took our Master Detailer a long time to get the paintwork refined to a standard he was happy with. Afterwards the hard work needed protecting with a super durable coating so, having wiped the paintwork down with IPA solution he applied two coats of Gtechniq EXO v2.

The results were absolutely stunning!

Having brought the wheels back to their golden best, our Master Detailer used Gtechniq C5 Alloy Wheel Armour to give them a heat resistant, non-stick, heat resistant coating to protect the wheels from the inevitable brake dust contamination and road grime build up. With C5 on the wheels they would be much easier for our customer to keep clean in the future.

By the time our Master Detailer had finished with the Subaru it was ready to take on anything the British weather can throw at it. The EXO v2 coating will ensure this Impreza stays looking shiny for years to come!

Whilst solid white paint has been popular for some time, metallic pearl white is a relatively new addition to the available car colour range. So when our customer brought his Audi S5 in metallic white to the Ultimate Detailing Studio for a New Car Protection Treatment it was interesting to see. Given the difference in appearance between a solid and metallic colour he decided to cover all his bases and opted for the Gtechniq EXO v2 Ultra Durable Hybrid Sealant followed by a layer of Swissvax Crystal Rock!

The metallic pearl white wasn’t as hard as typical Audi paintwork. The S5 had some greasy fingerprint marks that were fairly well ingrained into the surface. We removed these quite easily with a touch of Gtechniq P1 Nanocomposite Polish. There were also some deeper scratches around the bonnet where someone had tried to remove bird droppings. Gtechniq’s P1 took care of the worst of this too. – Master Detailer, UDS

Starting with Ultimate Snow Foam the S5 was pre-cleaned to remove the larger particles of dirt, then given a full wash using Gtechniq’s G-Wash. The car was dried using soft microfibre drying towels and then, using Bilt-Hamber Auto-Clay Original the whole car was thoroughly clayed to remove road tar, acid etch and a lot of tree sap!

The S5 had a fair amount of contamination and it took a while to get the glass-smooth feeling to the paintwork. The Bilt-Hamber Original took care of it all very effectively – whilst the soft is great for regularly maintained paint it would have been too soft on this occasion. – Master Detailer, UDS

The S5 was then polished by hand using Gtechniq P1 Nanocomposite Polish which left the metallic paintwork with a deep lustre.

Usually when you see white paintwork it has a really crystalline shine to it. The metallic white looked different; it had a glow to it and I knew the Crystal Rock would bring that hue out to perfection. – Master Detailer, UDS

With the paintwork brought up to standard, two layers of EXO v2 were applied and allowed to cure. After this the Swissvax Crystal Rock was applied by hand and gently buffed with an ultra-soft microfibre to bring out the unique glow that only a high quality carnauba wax brings to paintwork.

A long standing customer of Ultimate Detailing Studio brought his Lexus IS250c back to us for a Gloss Enhancement Treatment. Although his car had been left outside for the previous 18 months – in snow, rain, ice and everything else the weather has thrown at it – Crystal Rock had endured and the Lexus still looked amazingly shiny! However our customer recognised it was probably time to give his car some TLC, so he brought it back for a Gloss Enhancement Treatment to bring the paintwork back to its full glory.

When the car came back in I was really surprised to see how shiny it still looked under the layer of dirt that was on it! Unbelievably, in spite of the car having been out in all weathers over more than a year, Crystal Rock was still on the car! It just goes to show that a high percentage carnauba wax really does have amazing staying power! – Master Detailer, UDS

Japanese paintwork is notoriously soft and solid black paintwork in particular is very easy to mark and shows up every little scratch.

Lexus paintwork is very soft but this particular example was a real case in point – even removing polish residue could leave a mark if I wasn’t careful so I knew it was going to take a lot of care and skill to get this right. I also knew that once I’d finished the treatment the paintwork was going to look absolutely stunning! – Master Detailer, UDS

With soft paintwork, Ultimate Snow Foam pre-wash, non-contact cleaner really comes in to its own – the thick foam expands under the larger particles of dirt to lift them away from the surface of the paintwork allowing them to be freely rinsed away, posing minimum threat to the paint. Having been snow foamed the Lexus was then washed thoroughly using the Two Bucket Method, Swissvax Car Bath and Swissvax Waschpudel – a soft sponge covered with a thick, deep microfibre pile, which effectively traps dirt away from the surface of the paintwork. The vehicle was then rinsed thoroughly using an Aqua Gleam deionising water filter to ensure a spot-free result. Then the car was patted dry using Swissvax Micro-Dry Wonder Drying Towels.

Bringing the vehicle into the studio our Master Detailer inspected the paintwork closely using a 3M Sun Gun Colour Check Light. The paint thickness was measured with a Delfesko PosiTest Paint Depth Gauge to check for uniformity.

Initially I tried the RUPES LHR15ES with the Yellow Polishing Pad and RUPES Keramik Gloss, but even this fine combination was leaving some working marks on the paintwork. So I swapped to the 3M Yellow Pad and SCHOLL Concepts S17+ and then refined with SCHOLL Concepts Blue Polishing Pad and 3M Ultrafina SE Polish. – Master Detailer, UDS

With the paintwork now looking perfectly refined it was time for the ‘piece de resistance’, two layers of Swissvax Crystal Rock, a luxury hand-poured wax with maximum gloss-enhancing amounts of carnauba. The Lexus solid black paintwork achieved a really deep, wet-look gloss that only a high quality wax can manage!

It’s possibly a familiar story – you need a cover for your vehicle but, whilst you have an idea of whether you want an indoor or an outdoor cover, trying to work out which size or pattern is the right one for your car can be more challenging! As an online retailer our job is to make it easy for the customer to find what they are looking for. Historically, the finer points of matching cars to cover patterns has been tricky to reduce to a concise, user-friendly format.

Until now……

The clever technical guys at UF have created an interactive database which works in partnership with information provided by the DVLA to simplify the process of choosing your car cover. Now, rather than wading through pattern books trying to figure out which permutation of the 911 patterns is the correct one for your 996, all you need do is enter your registration number in to the ‘number plate‘ on our site. The Car Cover Selector retrieves the information for your vehicle and displays your cover options with the correct pattern already selected for you. Then the only thing you need to decide is whether to opt for a fully tailored or semi-tailored fit. Whichever you select, the correct pricing is displayed according to the specifics of your vehicle. With car covers from industry leading UK & US manufacturers such as Specialised Covers, Covercraft, Moltex and Supertex, you can be sure that we have got it covered.

We have access to over 80,000 patterns at our fingertips to cover everything from the Audi A3 to the R8, the Ford KA to the Ford Kuga, the Volkswagen Fox to the Volkswagen Touareg.
Buying a new vehicle is a big investment, so it’s essential to give it the best possible protection right from the start.

This gloriously luxurious Range Rover TDV6 Vogue SE was delivered to the Ultimate Detailing Studio for a New Car Protection. The customer had only recently bought it from the dealership and it had less than 500 miles on the clock so it was the perfect time to protect the paintwork, trim and wheels with a highly scratch resistant, durable synthetic sealant such as 22PLE glass coatings.

The Luxor premium metallic paint was in very good condition with hardly a swirl or scratch in sight. The customer hadn’t washed it since he bought it so the typical wash-induced markings were not in evidence. Wisely our customer thought to bring it to us to have it glass coat protected, meaning it was less likely to incur swirling in the future.

Initially the Range Rover was pre-cleaned using Ultimate Snow Foam. The wheels were thoroughly washed using R222 High Performance Wheel Cleaner Gel and the arches and all door and boot shuts cleaned with Meguiar’s All Purpose Cleaner. The whole car was then washed using Gtechniq G-Wash and rinsed with an Aqua Gleam de-ionising water filter. The Range Rover was then patted dry with Swissvax Wonder Microfibre Drying Towels.

Now thoroughly clean, the paint was inspected using a 3M Sun Gun Colour Check Light. Seeing the paintwork was in very good condition our Master Detailer opted for polishing by hand and selected Gtechniq P1 Nanocomposite Polish. Afterwards all the surfaces were wiped down with IPA solution to ensure all residues removed. The first layer of 22PLE VX1 Pro Signature Glass Coat was then applied and allowed to cure for 6 hours.

In the interim all the windows were cleaned and sealed with Gtechniq G1 ClearVision Smart Glass and the plastic trim protected with 22PLE VR1 Plastic & Trim Restorer. The large wheel rims were coated with 22PLE VM1 Rim & Metal Coat to protect them from road grime, brake dust deposits and salts. The tyres were treated with Swissvax Pneu Glossy to complete the high-shine look.

Once the first layer of VX1 Pro Signature Glass Coat had cured a second layer was applied. This should ensure the paintwork is fully protected for a long time to come!

Gtechniq products are well known for their effectiveness, their performance and their durability. C1 Crystal Lacquer, C2 Liquid Crystal and EXO UDHC have proven extremely popular since their release, and whilst both C1 and C2 have been the subject of reformulation EXO has, to date, remained the same. That is, until now.

Original EXO is supplied as an aerosol. Quick and easy to apply, the only potential fly in the ointment is the requirement for panel temperatures to be at 20 degrees Celsius prior to application (to allow the covalent bond to form). That, and the aerosol itself is difficult to ship to many overseas destinations so non-mainland residents are missing out!

Recognising this, Gtechniq set about a reformulation and have released EXO v2. Based on the original formula, EV2 (for short) comes as a liquid in a bottle, much like C1. Unlike original EXO, panel temperatures aren’t required to be 20 degrees C or above. EXO V2 is applied with a microsuede cloth and, so long as the temperatures are above freezing, the covalent bond will form in a matter of seconds. Additionally, the inorganic layer has been boosted to reportedly give even longer protection than the original formulation.

EV2 is very durable, but what sets it apart from more standard quartz coatings is that it is a hybrid of inorganic quartz plus an organic layer. This organic layer redresses the criticism levelled at quartz coatings that they don’t look quite as good as a wax coating. EXO v2 offers unbelievably good levels of gloss, water/dirt repellence and a good slickness. But unlike waxes and other polymer coatings, this effect is long lasting. – Rob Earle, Managing Director – Gtechniq

Working in partnership with Gtechniq, UDS put EV2 through its paces. A brand new Mercedes Benz C63 AMG with solid white paintwork required a New Car Protection Treatment and with white paint being notoriously difficult to work with we thought it would be the perfect choice to test out EV2.

Having been pre-washed with Ultimate Snow Foam, washed and dried, the paintwork was polished using a RUPES BigFoot LHR15ES with RUPES Keramik Gloss Gel Compound and the RUPES White Finishing Pad. As necessary prior to the application of any sealant, all surfaces were then wiped down with IPA solution in order to ensure all substrates are completely free of any silicones and residues.

The UDS Master Detailer applied EV2 using a square of microsuede buffing cloth, allowed 30 seconds to cure, then buffed with a microfibre. EV2 was applied in this manner to all the panels, glass, metal and plastic.

EV2 is very easy to apply, whether to paintwork, plastic or metal, although I still prefer G1 for glass. It takes slightly longer to apply in this formulation (as opposed to being in an aerosol) but without a doubt EXO V2 is one of the easiest sealants I’ve ever worked with. It buffs off beautifully and leaves behind a really slick layer. – Master Detailer, UDS

After allowing the first layer to cure for around 30 minutes, a second layer was applied.

Applying the second layer was just as easy as applying the first and the finish EV2 left behind was incredibly impressive. The white paintwork was noticeably shinier after it had been applied. Whilst I can’t comment on the longevity or the hardness of the finish, the slickness, hydrophobic properties and the final finish was nothing short of outstanding. – Master Detailer, UDS

When a supercharged AC Cobra comes roaring into the Ultimate Detailing Studio everyone knows about it! As a boy our customer always wanted an AC Cobra, it was his dream car, so he’s making the most of it now!

Our customer brought ‘Jezabel’, an AK Sports Cars ‘AK 427′ Cobra in Princess Blue with white racing stripes in to the Ultimate Detailing Studio for a Gloss Enhancement Treatment, wheel refurbishment and an interior Leather Protection Treatment.

The AC Cobras have lots of detail on them which make them quite labour intensive to detail properly. All the roof studs need removing and extra care and attention has to be paid around the headlamps, side lights and so on, to ensure the gaps are all kept free of residues. It’s such a gorgeous colour though I knew it was going to look fantastic when I’d finished with it! – Master Detailer, Ultimate Detailing Studio

To start with the AC Cobra was pre-washed using Ultimate Snow Foam, then shampooed with Gtechniq G-Wash. The wheels and arches were cleaned with Valet Pro Bilberry Wheel Cleaner. Thoroughly rinsed with an Aqua Gleam de-ionising water filter, the car was brought into the studio. Using a Defelsko PosiTest DFT Paint Depth Gauge the paint thickness was measured and close inspection with a 3M Colour Check Light revealed a moderate amount of swirling and scratches.

Removing the roof studs, catches and the number plates, our Master Detailer got to work with a FLEX PE14-2-150, a Dodo Juice Fin Cut Green Polishing Pad and SCHOLL Concepts S3 Gold.

The paintwork was fairly swirly but nothing out of the ordinary. Although it did seem the body had been resprayed in places the quality of the paint was very good which made it much easier to work with. – Master Detailer, Ultimate Detailing Studio

Once thoroughly prepared the attention switched to the britework – and on the AC Cobra there is a good proportion of britework – our Master Detailer polished all of it thoroughly using the FLEX polisher, a 3M Yellow Spot Polishing Pad and Mothers Mag & Aluminium Metal Polish. It was followed up with a layer of 22PLE VM1 Rim & Metal Coat to keep it looking pristine.

With the car now looking very shiny it was time for three applications of Gtechniq EXO Ultra Durable Hybrid Coating. Apart from its hydrophobic, oleophobic and dirt repellent properites, EXO provides a glossy, slick finish and can be used on a whole variety of substrates!

As the wheels are being refurbished they were not sealed, but tyres were still treated to an application of Gtechniq Tyre N Trim and the glass with Gtechniq G1 ClearVision Smart Glass.

Next on the ‘to-do’ list is the convertible hard top (which our customer will be dropping in to us shortly), followed by a Leather Protection Treatment for the cream and blue leather interior. Check back soon to read Part II and to see this striking car when it has been completely finished.
