The flowing lines of the vehicle favoured by car enthusiasts and celebrities alike has given rise to this vehicle&#8217;s iconic status which persists to the modern era.<\/p>\n<p>This particular 280 SL complete with its &#8220;Pagoda&#8221; removable hardtop was a recent acquisition by a long-standing customer of <a title=\"Ultimate Detailing Studio\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/detailing.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ultimate Detailing Studio<\/a>\u00a0having purchased it for his wife from a highly respected specialist. It was in excellent working order as it had recently been subject to a &#8216;nuts and bolts&#8217; restoration project carried out Mercedes-Benz Marque expert\u00a0John Haynes Auto Technics. As well as restoring the mechanics to concours condition, the upholstery had also been upgraded from the original MB-Tex to full genuine leather.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of having been well-looked after in the interim, the paintwork showed typical signs of wash damage, so on purchasing the vehicle the owner delivered it to the Ultimate Detailing Studio for a <a title=\"Full Paint Correction Treatment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/detailing\/full-paintwork-correction-treatment.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Full Paint Correction Treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>This is a lovely example of the 280 SL Pagoda so the customer really wanted to have it looking its best. It wasn&#8217;t that the paintwork was scratched so much as swirled. It&#8217;s quite usual to see the familiar cob-webbing marks even on cars that have been cherished and cared for regularly &#8211; it&#8217;s quite easy to introduce these swirls when washing unless you have the right equipment and fully understand the process required. &#8211; Derek Ginger, Master Detailer, UDS<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Initially the centre wheel caps were removed, then bodywork and wheels and hub caps were treated with <a title=\"Nanolex Wheel Cleaner &amp; Iron Remover\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/nanolex\/wheel-cleaner-and-iron-remover.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nanolex Wheel Cleaner &amp; Iron Remover<\/a> to remove ferrous contamination.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda Automatic Paintwork Correction Treatment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/nanolex\/wheel-cleaner-and-iron-remover.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Wheel hub caps treated with a ferrous contamination remover. Then the 280 SL was washed using the <a title=\"Two Bucket Method\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/ultimate-finish-wash-and-rinse-two-bucket-set.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Two Bucket Method<\/a>, <a title=\"Swissvax Car Bath\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/car-bath.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swissvax Car Bath<\/a> and a <a title=\"Waschpudel\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/waschpudel.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Waschpudel<\/a>. The car was rinsed free of suds, then given a final, pure water rinse using an <a title=\"Aqua Gleam\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/aqua-gleam\/0ppm-de-ionising-water-filter-12.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aqua Gleam<\/a>\u00a0De-ionising water filter connected to a hose. Using Swissvax <a title=\"Micro-Dry Wonder Drying Towel\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/micro-dry-wonder-drying-towel.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Micro-Dry Wonder Drying Towel<\/a> the car was carefully dried and brought into the studio.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda Automatic Paintwork Correction Treatment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/machine-polishing.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Swirl marks in the paintwork of the Mercedes 280 SL Pagoda\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/SL280-8.jpg\" alt=\"Pagoda Automatic Paintwork Correction Treatment\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Using the <a title=\"RUPES\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/rupes-bigfoot-random-orbital-polishing-system.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RUPES<\/a> BigFoot LHR15ES Polisher with a <a title=\"Flexipad Microfibre Cutting Disc\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/flexipads\/microfibre-cutting-disc-160mm-6-5.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flexipad Microfibre Cutting Disc<\/a> and <a title=\"SCHOLL Concepts S3 Gold High Performance Cutting Compound\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/scholl-concepts\/s3-gold-high-performance-cutting-compound.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SCHOLL Concepts S3 Gold High Performance Cutting Compound<\/a> the swirl marks were carefully removed from the bodywork and black hard-top.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda Automatic Paintwork Correction Treatment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/scholl-concepts\/s3-gold-high-performance-cutting-compound.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Mercedes 280 SL Pagoda paintwork corrected using SCHOLL Concepts S3 Gold\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/SL280-9.jpg\" alt=\"Pagoda Automatic Paintwork Correction Treatment\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The clearcoat on the bodywork was relatively hard as you would expect with Mercedes paint. For these and for the tighter areas on the bodywork, the <a title=\"RUPES BigFoot LHR 75E Mini\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/rupes\/bigfoot-lhr75e-mini-deluxe-edition-kit.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RUPES LHR 75E<\/a> BigFoot Machine Polisher was used.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda Automatic Paintwork Correction Treatment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/rupes\/lhr-75-bigfoot-pneumatic-mini-random-orbital-polisher.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Centre caps polished using the RUPES LHR 75 BigFoot Pneumatic Machine Polisher\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/SL280-13.jpg\" alt=\"1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda Automatic Paintwork Correction Treatment\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bodywork, wheels and roof were refined using the <a title=\"FLEX PE14-2-150\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/flex\/compact-variable-speed-rotary-polisher.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FLEX PE14-2-150<\/a> rotary polisher, a Black 3M High Gloss Polishing Pad and PolishAngel Master Final Polish II. The engine bay was polished by hand with Master Final Polish II and a foam applicator pad.<\/p>\n<p>With the paint correction complete, the paintwork was enhanced and protected with two layers of <a title=\"Swissvax Best of Show\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/best-of-show-wax.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swissvax &#8216;Best of Show<\/a>&#8216;, a\u00a0highly-concentrated wax containing 51% of purest yellow grade-one carnauba by volume.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda Automatic Paintwork Correction Treatment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/best-of-show-wax.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Swissvax 'Swissvax Best of Show' carnauba wax enhances the deep, wet-look shine &amp; provides excellent hydrophobic properties\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/SL280-17.jpg\" alt=\"Pagoda Automatic Paintwork Correction Treatment\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>With this type of car Swissvax Best of Show was the obvious choice. It adds a touch of luxury to an already classy car and really makes the paintwork look spectacular. This is a chemical cleaner which does not put fine scratches into the sensitive surface and leaves behind a warm lustre.
