From the distinctive sound of the air-cooled engine to the performance that to this day remains impressive, 911 fans all over the world rally round to share stories and revel in this iconic piece of German engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Having acquired the vehicle\u00a0from a\u00a0Porsche Club GB member, the current owner of this 1989 Carrera 3.2 Targa was just as enthusiastic about his new purchase. The brief was simple: enhance and preserve the appearance of this iconic car. Consequently, the 911 was booked into UF&#8217;s Brands Hatch based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/detailing.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detailing Studio<\/a>\u00a0for a bespoke package of services.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>There is no denying the quality of classic air-cooled 911s. This car is over twenty-six years old and is still going strong. As you&#8217;d expect, the paintwork had picked up a significant amount of wash swirls and scratches and because it&#8217;s solid black they really show up when the light hits them. However, the car had been well looked after and that combined with solid German craftsmanship meant there was very little sign of wear and tear. It&#8217;s a real testament to Porsche and the inherent integrity of their cars. &#8211; Jez Gilman, UF\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When preparing a car for paintwork correction it is essential to first ensure the paintwork has been thoroughly decontaminated and is clinically clean. The initial stage is to remove bonded iron contamination. Typically the ferrous contamination is as a result of brake pads shredding when under load. The ferrous particles are extremely hot, so they bond readily to surfaces and the bond strengthens as the particle cools. Left in situ these particles expand as they oxidise and over time will cause pitting in the surface of the substrate. It&#8217;s essential to remove these deposits quickly to prevent permanent damage. The safest way to do this is using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-products\/tar-bug-fallout-removers.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ferrous contamination remover<\/a>. The active ingredient shrinks the ferrous particle, causing it to break the bond with the substrate and allowing it to be safely\u00a0rinsed away. This means there&#8217;s no requirement for scrubbing with a wash mitt that could cause the particles to become detached from the substrate and attached to the mitt and then scrubbed over the wheel face or bodywork of the car causing further damage to the paint. Typically, ferrous removers contain a colour change function to indicate the presence of the contamination.<\/p>\n<p>Next the 911 was treated for sticky residues such as tar, tree sap and bug squash. Due to the nature of these elements an adhesive removing product is used. These dedicated products dissolve the bond the contamination forms. This can then be washed away without the need for scrubbing, again, making the process safer for paintwork. Next the car was degreased to remove oily residues, diesel splatter and grime build up. Particular attention was paid to the deck, boot and door shuts, and around the catches where the dirt tends to collect, the solution was lightly agitated with a soft detailing brush. The petrol cap was also degreased thoroughly.<\/p>\n<p>With the decontamination process almost complete the 911 was pre-cleaned using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/snow-foam\/ultimate-snow-foam-5-litres.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ultimate Snow Foam<\/a>\u00a0applied through a Kranzle\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/ultimate-snow-foam\/kranzle-ultimate-snow-foam-lance-new-and-improved.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Foam Lance<\/a> attached to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/kranzle\/k-1152-tst-pressure-washer.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kranzle 1152 TST<\/a> pressure washer. This creates a thick foam that clings to the surfaces of the vehicle, lifting larger particles of dirt and grit away from the surface. On cars with a lot of road debris the foam can be seen to change colour as it traps the dirt in the bubbles. These can then be safely rinsed away carrying the contamination with them.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/snow-foam\/ultimate-snow-foam-5-litres.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Ultimate Snow Foam removes larger particles of dirt &amp; grit from surfaces, making the main wash process safer for the paintwork\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/911Targa-2.jpg\" alt=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next step required the removal of the Fuchs wheels as the design makes cleaning the rear of the wheel difficult if left on the car. The wheels were individually cleaned using a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/uf-wheel-bucket-with-black-scratch-shield.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UF Wheel Wash Bucket<\/a> &amp; Scratch Shield with a solution of Swissvax Wheel Concentrate and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/by-brand\/wheel-woolies.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UF Wheel Woolies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/wheel-cleaner-concentrate.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Wheels removed from the car to allow thorough cleaning of the rear of the wheel face\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/911Targa-3.jpg\" alt=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bodywork of the 911 was then washed using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/ultimate-finish-wash-and-rinse-two-bucket-set.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Two Bucket Method<\/a>, an Ulti-Mitt Double Sided Merino <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/ulti-mitt-double-sided-wash-mitt.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wash Mitt<\/a> and Swissvax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/car-bath.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Car Bath<\/a>. A small\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/by-brand\/wheel-woolies.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wheel Woolie<\/a>\u00a0was used to get into the grilles and difficult to reach corners. The deep grain vinyl roof skin and matte T-bar were gently cleaned with Swissvax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/plastic-wash-250ml.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plastic Wash<\/a> and a Natural Horse Hair<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/natural-horse-hair-convertible-top-brush.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Convertible Top Brush<\/a> to ensure any dirt in the fine grain was completely removed. The car was then rinsed free of suds before being given a pure water rinse with an Aqua Gleam De-ionising Water Filter. The wheels were dried using soft microfibres and before putting them back on the car, both faces were protected using Swissvax Autobahn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/swissvax-autobahn-wheel-wax.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wheel Wax<\/a>. This wax is resistant to high temperatures and provides a hydrophobic barrier which repels water and dirt and inhibits brake dust from adhering to the surface. This will make future cleaning of the wheels much easier and provided the wheels are washed with a pH neutral <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care\/wheel-cleaners.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wheel cleaner<\/a>\u00a0the wax should remain effective for many months.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/swissvax-autobahn-wheel-wax.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Wheels protected using Swissvax Autobahn Wheel Wax\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/911Targa-4.jpg\" alt=\"Wheel cleaner\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once\u00a0inside the detailing studio and prior to commencing machine polishing, the paint was inspected under high intensity lighting. Multiple paint depth readings were taken on each panel.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/detailing\/paintwork-correction-treatment.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Bright lights illuminate swirls &amp; RDS on the solid black paintwork\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/911Targa-5.jpg\" alt=\"Damaged paintwork\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The high intensity lighting showed up the extent of the damage to the paintwork. There were many random deep scratches (RDS) and it was covered in wash induced swirls. The flat black paint was quite thick, 280 &#8211; 300 microns in places suggesting that the car may have been repainted at some stage. &#8211; Matt Back, UF<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/detailing-supplies\/paint-depth-gauge.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Paint depth readings indicated a full body re-spray\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/911Targa-6.jpg\" alt=\"Paint depth\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To tackle the relatively hard paintwork, Koch-Chemie Heavy Cut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/koch-chemie\/h8-02-heavy-cut-8-02.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">H8.02<\/a> was used on a 3M PERFECT IT III Yellow Polishing Pad applied\u00a0with\u00a0a FLEX PE14-2 rotary machine polisher. H8 is an extra heavy cutting compound with diminishing abrasives that tackle stubborn blemishes and gradually fine out to leave a glossy surface. The solvent-free formulation ensures the scratches and swirls are removed rather than filled.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carerra Targa Sport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/koch-chemie\/h8-02-heavy-cut-8-02.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Paintwork corrected using Koch Chemie Heavy Cut H8 02 compound\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/911Targa-7.jpg\" alt=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carerra Targa Sport\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The surface was then refined using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/rupes-bigfoot-random-orbital-polishing-system.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RUPES<\/a> BigFoot LHR15ES Dual Action Polisher and a RUPES Ultrafine White Finishing Pad. The paintwork was quite sticky and required a highly lubricated finishing polish, so Meguiar&#8217;s #205 Ultra Finishing Polish was chosen. This combination produces a microfine cut and extreme gloss, leaving the black paintwork absolutely gleaming.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carerra Targa Sport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/meguiars-205-ultra-finishing-polish.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Paintwork refined using Meguiar's #205 Ultra Finishing Polish\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/911Targa-8.jpg\" alt=\"Machine polishing\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carerra Targa Sport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/meguiars-205-ultra-finishing-polish.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Paintwork refined using Meguiar's #205 Ultra Finishing Polish\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/911Targa-8a.jpg\" alt=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carerra Targa Sport\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Targa top was protected using Swissvax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/protecton-plastic-trim.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Protecton<\/a>, a dressing which protects exterior plastics and vinyl from the damaging effects of UV, environmental and industrial fallout.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/protecton-plastic-trim.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"50\/50 image of the Porsche Targa deep grained vinyl top before and after being protected with Swissvax Protecton\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/911Targa-9.jpg\" alt=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The satin T-bar was protected using Swissvax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/opaque-wax-200ml.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Opaque<\/a>, a wax specifically designed for matte and satin finishes.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/opaque-wax-200ml.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Porsche Targa T-bar protected with Swissvax Opaque\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/911Targa-9A.jpg\" alt=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Swissvax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/seal-feed.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seal Feed<\/a> was used to moisturise the rubber door and window seals and to prevent them from drying out and cracking. Specifically designed for rubber, Seal Feed contains natural nourishing oils to rehydrate and protect against UV.\u00a0Even hardened seals become soft and flexible again after several applications.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/seal-feed.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Natural rubber requires different treatment to synthetic plastics. Swissvax Seal Feed nourishes &amp; protects.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/911Targa-10.jpg\" alt=\"Swisswax\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This 911 Targa Sport had a factory fitted &#8216;Whale Tail&#8217; spoiler with a &#8216;pedestrian-friendly&#8217; rubber lip. \u00a0Swissvax Seal Feed was applied to this and all the external rubber components including the bumper bellows.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/seal-feed.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"The rubber lip on the whale tail is protected with Swissvax Seal Feed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/911Targa-11.jpg\" alt=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the paintwork corrected and refined,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/best-of-show-wax.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swissvax Best of Show <\/a>was\u00a0carefully applied by hand and buffed off with a high quality microfibre buffing fleece. One of the most popular carnauba waxes in the Swissvax portfolio, Best of Show contains around 51% by volume of the purest grade carnauba. The effect on black paintwork is absolutely dazzling: a deep, wet-look shine that makes paintwork look jaw-droppingly glossy.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/best-of-show-wax.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Swissvax Best of Show carnauba wax produces a deep, wet-look shine, highly effective particularly on black paintwork\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/911Targa-13.jpg\" alt=\"Classic 1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Sport\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The black leather interior with red piping was in very good condition and required only a light clean. Swissvax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/leather-cleaner.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leather Cleaner<\/a> was used to remove the soiling and the leather was then protected with Swissvax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/swissvax\/leather-milk.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leather Milk<\/a>.
