In collaboration with Cosworth, Ford took elements and inspiration for the design and engineering from a variety of race vehicles and the RS Cosworth subsequently enjoyed a great deal of success. In 1987, the RS Cosworth was homologated and only 500 were produced. As a result, they are largely a rare sight, and those in possession tend to be passionate about them.<\/p>\n<p>This RS500 Cosworth had only recently been acquired by UF&#8217;s customer and he booked it into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/detailing.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UF Detailing Studio<\/a> for extensive detailing. Having been lovingly cared for and stored, the car arrived looking very much the part of a cherished classic.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Enthusiasts tend to be enthusiastic about their cars in every sense of the word, so although I knew this RS500 Cosworth had been booked in for a five-day treatment I wasn&#8217;t surprised when it turned up looking clean and with the paintwork in better condition than I&#8217;ve seen on many brand new cars! That said, the customer&#8217;s desire was to get the car absolutely show ready, which is far more in-depth and intensive than a paintwork correction, so I knew I would need the five days to bring it up to standard. &#8211; Derek Ginger, Master Detailer, UF Detailing Studio<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The first stage was to ensure thorough decontamination of the surfaces. To make the wheel arches easier to clean, each side was jacked up in turn and the wheels removed. This allowed the wheel rims to be cleaned back and front and also facilitated comprehensive cleaning of the wheel arches, the underside of the car and the sills.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/detailing.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"The wheels were removed to allow for thorough cleaning, such as would be expected of a show-standard car\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/COS-2.jpg\" alt=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These areas could then be decontaminated, initially using Bilt-Hamber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/bilt-hamber\/korrosol.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Korrosol<\/a> Iron Fallout Remover, an iron contamination remover. This acts on ferrous particles, derived from brake pads shredding as the discs are applied. The hot particles bond quickly to whichever substrate they come into contact with, commonly making wheel arches, wheels and sills the most contaminated areas. Left in place, the bonded particles begin to oxidise and as they do so they expand and over time will cause permanent pitting in the substrate. Korrosol acts on the particles to shrink them, forcing them to release their bond without damaging the underlying surface. The chemical reaction produces a colour change function &#8211; sprayed onto ferrous particles the product changes colour from a red to deep purple. When no further colour development occurs the solution is ready to be rinsed away, carrying with it the contamination.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/bilt-hamber\/korrosol.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Bilt-Hamber Korrosol changes colour on contact with ferrous contamination\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/COS-3.jpg\" alt=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A solution of Meguiar&#8217;s All Purpose Cleaner was used to strip road grime and then the areas were treated with Bilt-Hamber Surfex HD to remove any greasy residues. The underside of the car was then pre-cleaned with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/ultimate-snow-foam\/kranzle-ultimate-snow-foam-and-lance-kit.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ultimate Snow Foam<\/a> applied using a Kranzle-adapter snow foam lance and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/kranzle\/k-1152-tst-pressure-washer.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kranzle 1152 TST<\/a> pressure washer. The thick foam clings to surfaces and gets into hard to reach areas. As the foam dwells, it lifts larger particles of dirt and grit away from the surface.\u00a0After a few minutes, the foam can be rinsed away taking contamination with it. Once completed, the wheels were replaced and the bodywork was treated using the same processes. Such non-contact removal safeguards the lacquer from being scratched; the usual result of scrubbing at such contamination with a wash mitt.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/ultimate-snow-foam\/kranzle-ultimate-snow-foam-and-lance-kit.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Ultimate Snow Foam lifts larger particles of dirt &amp; grit away from the surface of the vehicle, cleaning contamination from hard to reach crevices\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/COS-4.jpg\" alt=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The RS500 Cosworth was carefully washed using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/ultimate-finish-wash-and-rinse-two-bucket-set.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Two Bucket Method<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/ulti-mitt-double-sided-wash-mitt.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ulti-Mitt<\/a> Double Sided Merino Wash Mitt for the bodywork, a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/uf-wheel-bucket-with-black-scratch-shield.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UF Wheel Bucket<\/a> with Scratchshield and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/by-brand\/wheel-woolies.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UF Wheel Woolies<\/a>. Keen to avoid a shampoo with gloss enhancers, GYEON <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/gyeon\/q2m-bathe.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Q2M Bathe<\/a> was used to ensure a squeaky clean surface. The car was then rinsed clear of suds before an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/aqua-gleam\/0ppm-de-ionising-water-filter-12.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aqua Gleam<\/a> Deionising Water Filter was attached to the hose to give a final, pure water rinse. Using UF Ultra-Soft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/ultra-soft-microfibre-drying-towel.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microfibre Drying Towels<\/a>, the car was patted dry and moved into the studio. Here the door trims, badges, grill, under the wheel arches and the underside of the vehicle were dried with an air blower to ensure no water remained trapped in these hard-to-reach areas.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/detailing.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Underside of the vehicle dried using an air blower\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/COS-5.jpg\" alt=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/detailing.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Trim, crevices &amp; gullies on the vehicle dried thoroughly using an air blower\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/COS-6.jpg\" alt=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Multiple paint depth readings were taken on each panel and the paintwork was inspected under high-intensity lighting for swirls, scratches and other damage.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/detailing\/paintwork-correction-treatment.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Relatively few surface wash swirls in the paintwork, several random deep scratches (RDS)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/COS-7.jpg\" alt=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The lights revealed very few swirls but there were several random deep scratches (RDS) that were going to take some work to remove. Before starting the paint correction stage, I wanted to know the thickness of the paint layer so I could better judge the machine, pad and product combination. Paint depth readings indicated a respray and, given the good condition of the paintwork compared with the age of the vehicle I wasn&#8217;t surprised. &#8211; Derek Ginger, UF Detailing Studio<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To prepare the car to show standard, the engine and engine bay required cleaning and polishing. Whereas the electrics on modern vehicles tend to be fairly well weather proofed, classic vehicles require more respect! This engine had been heavily modified, so the additional equipment also needed preserving. The individual components were treated by using a 60\/40 solution of Meguiars All Purpose Degreaser applied to a microfibre and wiped over each part of the engine and engine bay. The areas were then cleaned in the same manner with Surfex HD to remove degreaser residues.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/engine-detail.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Each component within the engine bay was cleaned by hand\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/COS-8.jpg\" alt=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once this stage was complete the engine bay was completely covered with protective detailing sheeting and secured with detailing tape to prevent any ingress of compounding dust during the next stage.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/engine-detail.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Each component within the engine bay was cleaned by hand\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/COS-9.jpg\" alt=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bonnet edge, the underside, the lip across the front, the shuts and struts were machine polished using the FLEX <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/flex\/pe8-4-80-mini-rotary-machine-polisher.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PE8-4-Mini Rotary Machine Polisher<\/a> with the FLEX M14 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/flex\/m14-double-adaptor-extension.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Double Adaptor Backing Plate Extension<\/a> and a FLEX Spot Pad. The boot was treated in the same manner.\u00a0Then attention turned to the bodywork.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/detailing.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Metal &amp; painted components machine polished with a FLEX PE8-4-Mini\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/COS-10.jpg\" alt=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>As I started machine polishing I could really gauge just how soft the paint was. I started out using the FLEX PE8-4 Lightweight Mini Rotary Machine Polisher but even on the lowest speed, I wasn&#8217;t getting the results I wanted other than on the bonnet. So I first corrected the bonnet using the FLEX and then switched to the RUPES Duetto dual action polisher to reduce heat generation. I made another pass over the bonnet using this combination before moving on to the rest of the car. &#8211; Derek Ginger, UF Detailing Studio<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/flex\/pe8-4-80-mini-rotary-machine-polisher.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Initially the nonnet was corrected using the FLEX PE8-4-Mini\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/COS-11.jpg\" alt=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The remainder of the bodywork was corrected using the RUPES BigFoot LHR12 Duetto dual action polisher fitted with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/kamikaze-collection\/beast-lhr21-and-lhr12.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kamikaze Collection &#8216;Beast&#8217; Backing Plate<\/a> for a more intensive cutting action. The combination of a Flexipads DA Microfibre Cutting Disc and Menzerna Heavy Cut Compound 400 (FG400) worked quickly to remove the deeper scratches.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/rupes\/bigfoot-lhr-12e-duetto-standard-edition-kit.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"RUPES BigFoot LHR12 Duetto used to correct the paintwork, removing RDS &amp; swirls\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/COS-12.jpg\" alt=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/rupes\/bigfoot-lhr-12e-duetto-standard-edition-kit.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"The paintwork was already starting to look significantly better even before the refining had begun\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/COS-13.jpg\" alt=\"Ford Sierra Cosworth Paint Correction &amp; Show Detail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next week&#8217;s UF blog will feature the remainder of this extensive show car detail.
