A dazzling white version gained fame as Sonny Crockett&#8217;s choice of transport in the hugely popular Miami Vice series (replacing the Ferrari Daytona replica). A generation of budding petrol heads grew up dreaming of cruising along Miami sands in a Testarossa with Jan Hammer&#8217;s soundtrack playing and the exhilarating sound of the flat-12, 5-litre engine.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SbWw8eecpPg?rel=0?ecver=1\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This Type F110 Testarossa recently booked into UF&#8217;s Brands Hatch studio had been the subject of an extensive rebuild, from the brakes and suspension components through to the flat-12 engine which was absolutely spotless. Paint protection film (PPF) covered the headlight lenses and a complete respray completed prior to the rebuild&nbsp;had resulted in an unusually thick (380-420 microns)&nbsp;albeit consistent layer of paint. &nbsp;The new metallic black paintwork was harder than the original soft paint typically found on Ferraris of this age. Before a comprehensive appraisal could take place the Testarossa required thorough decontamination and cleaning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/bilt-hamber.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bilt-Hamber<\/a> Korrosol was applied to the bodywork and wheels to remove iron contamination. When brakes are applied, tiny hot metal particles shred and become airborne. These bond to the first surface they come into contact with, so areas with the highest degree of build-up are wheels, behind the wheel arches and along the sills. These particles begin to oxidise and as they do so they swell. Left in situ they can cause permanent pitting in the surface. Therefore, prior to applying a durable ceramic sealant, it is essential to ensure these particles are first removed otherwise they may be sealed under the coating. The active ingredient in Korrosol shrinks the particles, causing them to break their bond with the surface and allowing them to be easily rinsed away. Korrosol also contains a colour-change ingredient, changing to a deep purple as it neutralises the iron contamination.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"1991 Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/bilt-hamber\/korrosol.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Non-contact methods such as Korrosol are the safer choice for the removal of iron contamination\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/FTESTAROSSA-3.jpg\" alt=\"Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A degreasing solution of Bilt-Hamber Surfex HD was applied using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/kwazar-sprayers.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kwazar<\/a> Orion Super Pro+ Pump-Up Sprayer, allowing for accurate application between the grilles and fins on the Testarossa. Surfex HD eliminates oily and greasy residues such as road grime and diesel splatters.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"1991 Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/bilt-hamber\/surfex-hd-5-litre.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Bilt-Hamber Surfex-HD removes greasy, oily residues which would otherwise interfere with the bonding of the ceramic sealant\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/FTESTAROSSA-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The final stage of decontamination was to apply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/snow-foam\/ultimate-snow-foam-5-litres.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ultimate Snow Foam<\/a>. This non-contact pre-cleaner creates a thick clinging foam which reaches into the nooks and crannies, lifting larger particles of dirt and grit away from the surface of the car and allowing them to be freely rinsed away.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"1991 Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care\/snow-foam-lances-and-kits.aspx?manufacturerid=113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Ultiamte Snow Foam is applied through a foam lance attached to a pressure washer to create a clinging foam that reaches into the nooks &amp; crannies\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/FTESTAROSSA-4.jpg\" alt=\"Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"1991 Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care\/snow-foam-lances-and-kits.aspx?manufacturerid=113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Ultimate Snow Foam lifts larger particles of dirt &amp; grit away from the surface of the vehicle &amp; allows them to be easily rinsed away before a wash mitt comes into contact with the paintwork\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/FTESTAROSSA-5.jpg\" alt=\"Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Testarossa was then thoroughly rinsed clean of any foam using a Kranzle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/kranzle\/k-1152-tst-pressure-washer.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">K-1152 TST<\/a> pressure washer.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"1991 Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/kranzle-pressure-washers.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Kranzle pressure washers are built using high quality brass &amp; stainless steel components making them the sturdy choice for professional detailers\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/FTESTAROSSA-8.jpg\" alt=\"Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The wheels were cleaned using a solution of Nanolex <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/nanolex\/pure-shampoo.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pure Shampoo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/wheel-woolies.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wheel Woolies<\/a>, long-handled brushes which fit through the spokes of the wheels to clean through to the back of the rim.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Wheel Woolies are available in selection of sizes to suit the intricate designs found on alloy wheels\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/FTESTAROSSA-2.jpg\" alt=\"Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"><\/p>\n<p>The Testarossa was given a wash using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/ultimate-finish-wash-and-rinse-two-bucket-set.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Two Bucket Method<\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/ulti-mitt-double-sided-wash-mitt.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ulti-Mitt<\/a> Wash Mitt and Nanolex Pure Shampoo. After rinsing away the suds, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/aqua-gleam\/0ppm-de-ionising-water-filter-12.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aqua Gleam<\/a> De-ionising Water Filter was attached to a hose to give a final, pure water rinse. Afterwards, the car was brought into the detailing studio and dried using ultra-soft&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/uf\/ultra-soft-microfibre-drying-towel.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">microfibre&nbsp;drying towels<\/a>. The paintwork, now clean, was ready for close visual inspection under high-intensity lighting to determine the true level of damage.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Close inspection revealed that although the paint had many swirls, they were largely limited to surface defects, not penetrating through the clearcoat. The newer metallic black paint was harder than the original Ferrari factory paint and I selected the pad and compound combination on that basis. &#8211; Derek Ginger, Master Detailer, UF Detailing Studio<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To correct the paintwork blemishes, a RUPES <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/rupes\/bigfoot-lhr-12e-duetto-standard-edition-kit.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BigFoot LHR12E Duetto<\/a> was used with a Kamikaze Collection <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/kamikaze-collection\/banzai-dynamics-red-polishing-pad.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Banzai Dynamics Polishing Pad<\/a> and Menzerna Medium Cut Polish 2400 (previously PO85RD3.01). Menzerna 2400 contains a delicate diminishing abrasive and lubricating oils, allowing the polish to be worked for longer to achieve a gloss finish that requires minimal refining. The Banzai Dynamics Polishing Pad features Dot Point Polishing (DPP) technology, where the &#8216;nippled&#8217; surface of the pad creates a superb polishing action whilst encouraging air flow, keeping frictional temperatures lower and allowing polishing to be carried out over longer periods.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"1991 Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/kamikaze-collection\/banzai-dynamics-red-polishing-pad.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Banzai Dynamics Polishing Pad with DPP works effectively to correct paintwork whilst maintaining optimum paint temperature\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/FTESTAROSSA-15.jpg\" alt=\"Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The grids covering the taillights were removed to allow for machine polishing as they were covered in swirls. Once the lenses were clear, the grids were replaced.<\/p>\n<p>Refining the paintwork was completed using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/flex\/compact-variable-speed-rotary-polisher.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FLEX PE14-2<\/a>&nbsp;Rotary Machine Polisher. The larger panels were polished to a high gloss with a 3M PERFECT-IT III Black Polishing Pad and Menzerna Super Finish Plus 3800. Using an extension bar fitted to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/flex\/pe8-4-80-mini-rotary-machine-polisher.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FLEX PE8-4<\/a>&nbsp;Lightweight Mini Rotary Polisher and a FLEX Yellow One-inch Backing Plate with a FLEX One-Inch Soft Finishing Spot Finishing Pad, the areas between the fins running along the sides of the Testarossa were polished.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Getting between the fins presented a challenge as the doors beneath are concave, but as the respray had been completed with the fins in place they now couldn&#8217;t be removed. After protecting the flat edges with detailing tape, the deep crevices were accessed using a backing plate extender bar, a one-inch backing plate and pad. &#8211; Derek Ginger, Master Detailer, UF Detailing Studio<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a style=\"color: #ff4b33;\" title=\"1991 Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/Store\/Search.aspx?SearchTerm=spot&amp;Manufacturer=109&amp;ManufacturerTerm=FLEX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"The deep fins along the side of the Testarossa were polished using the FLEX spot backing plate and finishing pad\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/car-care-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/FTESTAROSSA-16.jpg\" alt=\"Ferrari Testarossa - Paint Correction Treatment\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the gloss now fully restored to the paintwork, Kamikaze Collection <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/kamikaze-collection\/ism-pro-hydrocarbon-coating-30ml.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ISM PRO Hydrocarbon Coating<\/a> was applied to protect and preserve the finish. This highly durable nanotechnology-based sealant uses German-sourced elements and Kamikaze Collection&#8217;s ultra-low molecular weight hydrocarbon ingredients to produce a coating with extreme water repelling properties. ISM PRO also produces a superior, candy-gloss shine enhancing further the metallic fleck in the paint. The secret to ISM PRO&#8217;s effectiveness and durability lies not only in its formulation but also in the precise application method under tightly controlled environmental conditions. As a result, ISM PRO is available only as a service through Kamikaze Collection trained and certified professional detailers.<\/p>\n<p>The exhaust tips were polished and protected using Britemax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/britemax\/easy-cut-metal-polish.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Easy Cut Polish<\/a> and Britemax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theultimatefinish.co.uk\/britemax\/final-shine-metal-sealant.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Final Shine Metal Sealant<\/a>, also known as Britemax Metal Twins. Easy Cut Polish can be used in conjunction with a machine polisher to quickly remove tarnish and soot. Heat resistant, water and oil repelling, Stance Rim Coat protects from dirt, grime and damaging brake dust build-up, helping to keep wheels cleaner longer. Contamination cannot bond as effectively with the treated surface, so is more easily washed away. This negates the requirement for astringent wheel cleaners, the accumulative use of which may compromise the wheel&#8217;s lacquered finish.
