Give Me Sunshine
by Norman Wood, 16 Feb 2011
My Jaguar S Series is parked on my driveway and is only used now and again. It is fitted with a Jag cover to protect it against the elements. In order to maximize the solar charger it is fed from the battery in the boot and the charger remains outside on the driveway. To prevent it from being nicked , the simple solution is to attach a bicycle 1.8 meter lock cable to the car tow eye and secure it to the handle of the solar unit. This way you get the best optimum charging rate even with a car cover on. By the way it works great no more AA call outs for flat battery
Charge of the Light Brigade

If I only had room in the garage for my treasured classic car, the battery would be pampered over the winter with the gentle ministrations of an intelligent mains charger. But the motorbike takes precedence and claims the use of the charger. While the car gets as long a run as is feasible as often as possible, there’s little incentive from our miserable winter to get fun wheels rolling. So how do I pamper the car battery, knowing it will sit outside, immobile, for lengthy periods in the cold with residual electrical fitments slowly leeching charge?
The answer, surprisingly for an English winter, is a 4W solar panel charger. Totally independent of any mains supply, this compact briefcase unfolds to reveal two solar panels which can be positioned using the built-in props to catch maximum light, either inside or out. Yes, you can position the panel inside the car, usually on the dash, and even in winter daylight get a healthy bright green charging light showing the battery is being slowly fed. I’m lucky, with a rear mounted battery easily accessible and a glass hatchback allowing a range of positions to grab that sun when it appears.
Does it work? It’s true we’re talking about a tiny top-up charge on an overcast day, but as Mr Tesco says, every little helps and in direct sunlight you get a nice warm feeling that you’re doing the best you can for that expensive new battery during periods of enforced idleness.
